No words can truly describe seeing the sight where such ruthless and calculated mass murders took place. We arrived at the gates of Auschwitz II – Berkenau, and were first and foremost struck by the enormity of it, barbed wire fences (once electrified) ran for as far as you could see. Train tracks led you through the gates into a vast open space, containing remnants of prison cells, gas chambers, crematoriums and empty pits once full of ash.
We made our way over to Auschwitz I and joined a tour that took us around the prison blocks, many now converted into a museum. Rooms full to the brim with shoes, glasses, clothes and hair that had been removed from the victims and left at the camp after the liberation.
An unforgettable day.
something we should never forget
